Abstract

This study explores the dual theme of complaint and hope in modern Arabic poetry, portraying it as a profound human voice that expresses emotional and spiritual experience in moments of fragility and reflection. Complaint is not treated merely as a lament or expression of suffering, but as a contemplative and artistic mode that elevates personal pain into a search for transcendence and light. The research adopts a critical literary analytical approach with symbolic and Sufi dimensions, focusing on selected poems by notable poets such as Hafez Ibrahim, Abu al-Qasim al-Shabbi, and Abdul Rahman Shukri. It demonstrates how complaint and hope intertwine in political, social, and emotional contexts, often taking on mystical overtones—transforming lament into supplication, and sorrow into a yearning for justice and divine truth. The article analyzes symbolism, musical structure, and emotional language, showing how these poets turn suffering into a spiritual journey toward hope. Rich imagery and symbolic expressions (such as fire, rain, the path, justice, and the companion) are employed to reflect the soul’s internal conflict and its longing for deliverance. At times, complaint becomes a form of divine address, making the poem a Sufi voice echoing existential anxiety and the need for guidance. The study concludes that in these poetic examples, complaint transcends emotional or social catharsis to become an act of conscious artistic expression—infused with philosophical, spiritual, and aesthetic meanings. Poetry becomes a channel for invoking truth and climbing toward hope through the depths of pain. Keywords: Complaint, hope, modern Arabic poetry, symbolism, Sufism, emotional experience, Sufi perspective, poetic expression, self and cosmos.
