Abstract
The tell-settlement of Sultana represents a unique site of the Gumelniţa culture. Its uniqueness derives from the archaeological materials discovered here. Researches began in 1923, and during the 70’s and 80’s the settlement was researched almost completely, the site being constantly corroded by the waters of the barrage Iezerul Mostiştea. Unfortunately, the scientific documentation was lost so we have very little information about the characteristics of the settlement, houses, architecture, economy, etc. The cultural level was about 4 meters thick and included the three phases of the Gumelniţa culture, A1, A2 and B1. The article gathers for the first time some of the most spectacular discoveries, some of the least known and even unknown. The most important object discovered at Sultana is the famous pot with “lovers” a real masterpiece of the prehistoric art. The item is a bowl painted in red and white and has in the middle a man and a woman seated on a sort of bench, both painted in the same colors. Other two items represent combinations between zoomorphic (stylized bovine heads) and anthropomorphic (Fig.ures) elements, placed on a ceramic support represented by lids. The settlement of Sultana is remarkable by the large number and artistic quality of the anthropomorphic vases discovered here: anthropomorphic vases in the shape of a human head, anthropomorphic lids and vases with human face shaped under their lip. A bowl painted on the inside in graphite, decorated with polished strips has a bird (duck?) head shaped above the neck, painted in white. In the remainders of an oven, a hoard was found, made of golden pieces weighing 36.17 gr. A model of house was also discovered, with its walls and roof pierced (shrine?) and bone statues carefully worked. The ceramics were worked with great skill, as shown by the numerous and various pots, with rich decorations, discovered in the settlement. The number and quality of these discoveries make Sultana a unique site in the Southeastern Europe Neolithic.
