Abstract

Introduction: Influenza vaccination (IV) is one of the recommended measures to protect not only health workers and high-risk patients, but the whole population. The aim of the study was to evaluate adherence to the IV by nursing staff dedicated to the assistance of immunocompromised patients at the Federico II University Hospital in the last five years. Further objectives included: to identify training needs and to understand the reasons for the lack of adherence to the IV. Method: the observational study was conducted from June to September 2015; a questionnaire for nurses was administered using an online analysis module created with Google’s G-Drive platform. Results: a total of 227 questionnaires were administered with a participation rate of 67.8%. 61.3% of the sample believed in vaccinations as important tools for the reduction/elimination of diseases. In the year 2014-15, 89% of the sample did not have the flu vaccination. Over the last 5 years 20.8% said they have only been vaccinated once, 11% two or more times, while 68.2% had not been vaccinated. A need for further information was expressed by 80% of the sample. Conclusions: the absence of a company protocol and misconceptions regarding the IV seem to be the main elements that determined the results. There is the need to implement actions that can motivate operators to understand the importance of the IV, developing greater adherence.
