Abstract

<br> The on-line searching of the leading bibliographic files containing scientific and technical information places millions of references within the everyday grasp of scientists and engineers, whether they are geologists, drillers, refiners or users, or whether they are working on traditional energy sources or new energy sources. This new operational method is analyzed from the standpoint of the accessibility it provides in searching for references - both « physical » and a intellectual » accessibility. The experience gained by the Institut Français du Pétrole Documentation Center and the main databases it uses serve as the background for this analysis.
