Abstract
From birth babies develop the ability to perceive a wide range of intersensory relationships. In this study we investigated the development of the ability to perceive intersensory rhythm-based relationships. Three groups of 4, 7 and 10-months-old babies participated in an intersenory preference task in which a woman was used as an audiovisual stimulus. The woman carried out two performances –similar to those that adults regularly perform in front of babies during intersubjective exchanges– organized according to different rhythmic patterns. The results suggest that only the 10-month-old group recognize the rhythm-based intersensory relationship. The results are discussed as related to the previously known ability to detect and discriminate rhythmic patterns. Furthermore, the implications of these results for early intersubjective development are considered.
