Abstract

Nowadays, reproductive impairment and adverse birth outcome are emerging major health challenges in China. Effective prevention strategies for these problems substantially depend on the identification of the related risk factors in the population and on the understanding of their underlying mechanisms. In this review, we discuss the potential risk factors in environmental, lifestyle and psychological aspects. Besides the further profound understanding of known risk factors, such as environmental endocrine disruptors and heavy metals, the roles and mechanisms of some novel factors, including PM2.5, circadian disruption and chronic stress, were also unveiled. New knowledge and techniques, especially the findings in the mechanism of reproductive system development and functioning, multi-omics methods, novel toxicity testing strategy and cohort study may provide brand new opportunities and inspirations for future researches on the prevention and treatment of reproductive impairment and adverse birth outcome.
