Abstract

In 1976, Pertur tried to adapt ETA político-militar to the Spanish transition to democracy. His plan was to create a Bolshevik-style party which would act as a political front while ETA político-militar would be consigned to the rearguard. The polimilis created the EIA party which formed part of the Euskadiko Ezkerra list in the 1977 elections. This decision caused a rift among radical Basque nationalists, who split into two opposing fronts: the moderate Euskadiko Ezkerra, which was committed to using political channels, and the extremist option of Herri Batasuna and ETA militar, which ended up with the lion’s share of ETA’s legacy.
