Abstract

For cancer, Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) has become a potential targeted treatment. Low tissue penetration, inadequate phototoxicity, and undesired cytotoxicity are the limitations of current therapies. The development of cyanine-carborane salts, which are powerful photosensitizers (PSs) that use [cyanine+] to absorb near-infrared (NIR) light and [carborane−] to inertly absorb it. The use of [Cyanine+] [Carborane−] salts significantly improves PSs ability to target tumors and reduces cytotoxicity. Recent developments in nanomedicine and molecular chemistry have produced multipurpose molecules that have the potential to completely transform cancer diagnostics and treatment. Cyanine–Carborane salts, which combine the therapeutic potential of boron-rich Carborane with the diagnostic capabilities of near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent cyanine dyes, have become a particularly promising class of these novel medicines. The design and synthesis of these salts have advanced at the bench, and this article examines their potential translational impact at the bedside.
