Abstract
There is a common belief, in several philological studies, that Medieval Portuguese writing was phonetically bounded. In this article, some important aspects of it are discussed, based on the analysis of Cancioneiro da Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa writing system. Medieval Portuguese writing classification as phonetically bounded is questioned and favourable arguments towards classifying it as ortographic are presented.
