Abstract
This article describes road safety statistics for Germany, looking at the decade following reunification in October 1990. After an initial rise in danger of road travel, safety has largely improved steadily. The first gains resulted from improvements in roads and enforcement. Recent gains are due to education campaigns, especially for younger drivers, tighter restrictions on alcohol limits for drivers and new guidelines for design of rural roads. Germany is now 11th in road safety as measured by OECD (Organization for Economic and Cooperative Development) countries.
