Abstract
Invited review: Maximizing value and minimizing waste in clinical trial research in dairy cattle: Selecting interventions and outcomes to build an evidence base. By Sargeant et al., page 8594.Experimental designs conducted in study subjects among the population of interest provide the highest level of evidence for the efficacy of interventions when groups can be randomly allocated. However, the selection of interventions and outcomes currently is not being conducted to maximize the value of the research investment.Ideally, investigators should ensure that at least one of their interventions groups has been used previously, to allow results to be linked and compared across studies. The use of core outcome sets would ensure that at least some outcomes are common across trials. This will allow a body of evidence on intervention efficacy to be built over time, maximizing the research investment.
