Abstract
In the past decade, the computer and information industry has experienced rapid changes in both platform scale and scope of applications.Computers, smart phones, clouds, social networks, and supercomputers demand not only high performance but also a high degree of machine intelligence. To face these new computing and communication changes, we must upgrade the robots and the computing system with new capabilities, such as machine learning, IoT sensing, data analytics, and soft computing mimicking human intelligence.Compared with traditional robots, cognitive robots bring about new opportunities for discovering new values, help us to gain an in-depth understanding of the hidden values, and also incurs new challenges. The designed cognitive robots will achieve their goals via understanding the semantic meaning of unknown environment, intelligent sensing, automatic planning, multi-agent communication, and anticipating the outcome of actions.Generally, cognitive robotics merges two research fields, physical systems and cognitive computing architectures. The physical systems are designed to adapt to dynamic environments while the cognitive computing architectures explicitly take into account the need to acquire and exploit past experiences.Cognitive computing breaks the boundary between two separate fields, neuroscience and computer science. It paves the way for machines to have reasoning abilities which is analogous to human. The research field of cognitive computing is interdisciplinary, and uses knowledge and methods from many areas such as psychology, biology, signal processing, physics, information theory, mathematics, and statistics. The development of cognitive computing will keep cross-fertilizing these research areas. However, in collaborative robotics applications there still remain many open problems for using cognitive computing theories.Technologies like Computational Cognition and Perception (CCP) and Computational Neuroscience (CN) are driving as the best tools for upgrading the robots with near human intelligence, which can be intended to physically interact with humans in a shared workspace. The overall aim of this journal is to collect the state-of-the-art contributions on the Computational Neuroscience, Computational Cognition and Perception, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Human Action Analysis, Control Engineering, Sensor Engineering, and related applications in robotics.Aligning with the above-mentioned aims of the journal, Cognitive Robotics journal is finely designed to publish scientific studies and technical developments within the following categories concerning cognitive computing or their conversions.
