Abstract
Not having physically the victim, either because of or disappearance, is one of the most complex scenarios to conduct a forensic psychological assessment, even though it is possible to do it through retrospective psychological assessment techniques. Given the silence of the victim, psychological autopsy emerges currently as one of the most important reconstructive psychological evaluation techniques, constituting an essential forensic tool, becoming a guide for researchers about death causes, in those cases in which police investigation and medical-forensic investigation have failed to reach a criminalistic conviction of the death etiology. In this paper, application strategies for psychological autopsy in death cases of high complexity are reviewed. It is concluded that psychological autopsy, even when expressed in probabilistic terms, is an instrument of great importance for criminal investigation in indeterminate death or in simulated origin cases, its application in the forensic context being feasible on the grounds of the empirical evidence which sustains their results.
